Locked out of your house? What to do now

Stay calm and check everything first

Before calling anyone, check windows, the garage, and a spare key with a neighbour or family member. A surprising number of lockouts are solved without a locksmith.

Find a local locksmith

Search for a locksmith near you and compare their rates up front. Look for a local business with a real address and clear pricing, avoid the national call-centre numbers that add a markup.

What to ask when you call

  • What is the callout fee, and is it included in the hourly rate?
  • What is the total cost before you set out?
  • Do you charge extra at night or on weekends?
  • Can you open a euro cylinder / uPVC / composite door without damage?

If it is a break-in

If the lockout is because of a burglary, do not touch anything, call the police first, then a locksmith to secure the property. Many locksmiths offer emergency boarding-up.
