What is a callout fee and why do locksmiths charge one?

What a callout fee is

A callout fee is a flat charge for the locksmith travelling to you. It does not include the work itself — that is covered by the hourly rate. Expect £30–£60 for a local callout.

Why it exists

Locksmiths spend time and fuel travelling, and a callout fee protects their time if you decide not to go ahead. It should be agreed before they set out.

Watch for the red flags

  • A very low advertised price that jumps once they arrive
  • Refusal to give a total before starting
  • High-pressure upsells
